When to visit Kyrgyzstan: a month-by-month guide
The high lakes are only reachable for about a hundred days a year. Here is what each month actually looks like on the ground.
Almost every question we get about timing comes down to one thing: when are the mountain passes open? Everything else — prices, crowds, what the pastures look like — follows from that.
May and early June
Valleys are green and the canyons in the south are at their best. High lakes such as Song-Kul are usually still closed or only just opening. Good for cultural routes, Issyk-Kul and the south.
Mid-June to August
The full season. Every pass is open, shepherds are on the summer pastures, and yurt camps are running. Days are warm, nights at 3,000 m still drop close to zero. This is also when you should book earliest.
September
Our favourite month. The light is better, the crowds thin out, and the walnut harvest starts in Arslanbob. Snow can close the highest passes towards the end of the month.
October to April
Cities, Issyk-Kul and ski touring remain possible, but the high-altitude camps are closed. If you want a winter trip, tell us and we'll build something around what is genuinely accessible.
