Song-Kul Lake
A freshwater lake at 3,016 m ringed by summer pastures, where shepherd families still move up with their herds every June.

Song-Kul sits in a high bowl of grassland at 3,016 metres, three hours of switchbacks above the nearest town. There are no hotels, no permanent village and no mobile signal — only yurt camps that appear in June and are packed away again in September.
What you actually do there
- Sleep in a yurt with a felt floor and a wood stove, sharing the camp with the family that runs it.
- Walk or ride out along the shoreline in the late afternoon, when the light flattens and the herds come down to drink.
- Watch — or join — the daily work: milking mares, making kymyz, moving sheep between pastures.
When to come
The passes open around mid-June and close with the first heavy snow, usually in late September. July and August are warmest, but expect near-freezing nights year-round and several weather changes in a single day.
